This is a library of perfboard and single-sided PCB effect layouts for guitar and bass. I'm not an electrical engineer by any stretch of the imagination, just a DIY'er who likes drawing layouts. It is meant for the hobbyist (so commercial use of any of these layout is not allowed without permission) and as a way to give back to the online DIY community.

Here's a non-Fuzz Face/Tone Bender offering from D*A*M for Fuzz Friday. It's designed for bass, but sound great on guitar as well. It uses one half of a dual op amp to blend in clean signal, and the other half creates the distortion via soft clipping. You have 4 options for clipping diodes, germanium, silicon, LEDs, and bypass, selectable via a rotary switch. The rotary will have to be wired off board, but the rest of the pots are board mounted.

  1. Built. This stacks so well with other pedals.

I really jumped on this one. I connected a lot of the pots to each other directly, instead of through the board.

  2. Built. Gain pot seems to be reversed, didn't you noticed Alex ?
I did it with a lot of pots to pots wiring too.

    1. I did have the Gain pot reversed. It's fixed now and the layout has been updated.

  3. .0022uF between pin 5 of the op-amp and ground is missed.

  4. Hello.do you solder the pots on the component side or on the back side (solder side)?. Thanks

    1. I'm referring do the perfolboard layout

    2. Solder side. You can do the component side if you're using long leg pcb mount pots.

    3. Maybe this is a dumb question, but if you insert the pots through the component side and solder them on the solder side, wont they be in the wrong position (relative to the layout)?

The other boards i've put together that had board mounted, i allways have the solder side facing up (when the pedal is opened), so that i can solder the pots, after position everithing inside the enclosure.

      What am I missing?

Thanks a lot for all the layouts!

    4. Sorry, I wasn't clear. They're designed to be populated from the solder side if you're using regular right angle PCB mount pots, but if you populated them for the component side you'll need to rotate the pots 180º. Here's how I do them:

    5. Ok thanks
So first you solder them to the board and only after you mount the board+pots in the enclosure?
Doesn't that cause any problems like if you miss drilling in the enclosure and then the pots won't fit in the enclosure correctly..?

    6. I get the board all populated, then solder in the pots last. There's drilling templates for pretty much every layout with board mounted pots that's on the blog to help elimate guess work instilling enclosures. There's a tab above that links you to the template folder.

    7. Yeah. I've already checked the drilling template.
But I usually mount the pots on the enclosure, then after i mount the board to the pots (all inside the enclosure) and only then I solder the pots to the board. This way if you need to adjust something it is still possible.
      But that's me, I'm a noob lol

So, thanks one more time, you've enlightened me, you're a great guy and doing great work.

    8. That way won't work the way the layout is designed. You'd have no way of getting to the copper side to solder the pots in. If you want to mount the pots first like you described you'd have to do like I described above and use long leg pots and rotate them 180º. This ruins the drill template tho.

    9. Yes, i've realized that. But thank you for your replies.
I'll do it your way :)

    10. The clipping LEDs go in opposite directions? Or do you insert them in the same direction?
      Thanks

  5. Just completed this build, after some missed connections on my part lol.. it sounds great, thanks a lot.. I had to replace the 5817 with a similar diode because they were sold out, but there's no issue with that at all..

  6. Hello, does anyone have the "normal" voltages for the 4558?
    Shouldn't pin 4 be 0v?

    Thanks

    1. Pin 4 should be 0v, but highly doubt pin 5 should be 0v...

    2. ok, i'm not getting 0v at any of them but i'm still waiting for the pots to arrive. i'll check if i made any bridge,,

      thanks

    3. Finally received all the parts and it works great :)
For me, the filter and blend knobs should be reversed but it's ok, it works and that's what's important :)

  7. verified! I took blend pot b500k instead b100k.
