Here's a simple MOSFET-based booster circuit that'd be a nice alternative to the SHO. Should fit in a 1590A. FYI, the 1N4739 diode in the layout is a 9.1v zener. Here's the schematic for reference.
This is a library of perfboard and single-sided PCB effect layouts for guitar and bass. I'm not an electrical engineer by any stretch of the imagination, just a DIY'er who likes drawing layouts. It is meant for the hobbyist (so commercial use of any of these layout is not allowed without permission) and as a way to give back to the online DIY community.

Escobedo T.M.K.
Here's a really cool one designed by the great Tim Escobedo. T.M.K. = Too Many Knobs. (And you thought the Fuzz Factory had too many) It's part fuzz box, part noise maker and would probably be just as much at home on a synth rack as it would be on a pedal board. This can get pretty gnarly and should fit in a 1590B.

Black Arts Toneworks Fnord
Got a little Eagle excursion for Fuzz Friday. Here's the Fnord from Black Arts Toneworks. It's pretty much the same as the Escobedo Digital Octaver Fuzz with an added diode lift switch (though that's jumpered in the originals). It's a pretty gnarly fuzz with a wide range of tones. For you perfboard builders you should be able to translate this onto perf pretty easily.

Escobedo Tytewadd
Here's a quicky from the Folk Urban schematic archive for #FuzzFriday. It's a simple circuit with low power draw, so if you use batteries, this one won't drain it for a while. Q1 can be any medium to high NPN silicon.

JHS MiniBomb
Here's a simple clean boost circuit built by JHS. It's really just the Tim Escobedo Duente JFET boost with a fixed resistor instead of a trimmer. Because of that you probably want to socket that resistor (5.1k) and adjust to the J201 you use. Or you can just squeeze a 25k trimmer on there like Tim designed it. Should fit in a 1590a just fine.

Escobedo Idiot Wah
Here's a quicky designed by Tim Escobedo. It's an inductor-less wah, and you can use either a pot or an LDR to control the effect. It's small enough to fit in a 1590a if you want a fixed wah in a small package.
Resonance switch is a SPST.

Escobedo Ugly Face
Today's #fuzzfriday is an Tim Escobedo design: the Ugly Face. Here's what he had to say about it:
The Uglyface is a completely all-out fuzz unit for fat, noisy buzzsaw sounds. P1 sets the threshold for triggering the fuzz. This characteristic also means that notes can fade out abruptly when they decay below the set level. P2 is the frequency control. It functions as an unorthodox tone control, at one extreme producing synthesized octave down effects, at the other extreme, thin and nasal tones. When the threshold is set below the trigger point, the Uglyface becomes a free running oscillator, with P2 controlling the frequency. P3 is a Sensitivity control, regulating how much of the guitar signal will modulate the Frequency control.
Make sure the second IC is a CMOS 555 otherwise the effect won't work. Here's the schematic for reference.

Escobedo Punch-In-The-Face
Today's #fuzzfriday offering is the Punch-In-The-Face, designed by Tim Escobedo. It's based on the Fuzz Face, but with a JFET in Q2. Here's what Tim had to say about it:
The latest Fuzz Face inspired offering. The big difference is the "Trauma" control, when used with the Gain control, will yield tones from hard fuzz to octave up to sputtery pulse to "soft attack" fuzz. Good clean up with the guitar volume knob. It may be good to choose Q2 from a lot of J201s to give the best "soft attack" fuzz and octave up effects.
The pots can be board mounted using common short leg PCB pots, with the board vertically mounted in the pedal. Trauma and Volume pots mount from the component side, and Gain from the solder side.

Escobedo Octup!
Here's a clean octave up effect from Tim Escobedo. The Bias control offer subtle changes, which is why I have it as an external pot. He mentioned it might need a booster in front of it, just FYI.
