This is a library of perfboard and single-sided PCB effect layouts for guitar and bass. I'm not an electrical engineer by any stretch of the imagination, just a DIY'er who likes drawing layouts. It is meant for the hobbyist (so commercial use of any of these layout is not allowed without permission) and as a way to give back to the online DIY community.

Vemuram Jan Ray

Got a request for this one. It's another Timmy knockoff with a couple extra low value caps and a weird resistor array leading to the Bass control.

  1. Help explain how to connect the power cord to the foot switch.

    1. Here's a good diagram for offboard wiring.

You don't connect power to the footswitch.

    2. oohhh....Thank you very much It does not require connect a power cord from a foot switch connected to the circuit.

  2. Hi,the 1,5k resistor between Vref and Ground is unnecessarily.Parallel with 8,2k pull down Vref to 0,9v.I remove this resistor/dont see it on any Timmy Jan Ray schematic/and everything works fine.

    1. Thanks man, thanks to your comment I solved a problem that gave me the resistance 7k5 that I had put in place of the 1k5.

  3. Hi!
Your layout is verified now but 2 minors things to change:
    - replace the 1.5k resistor by a 7.5k to reach 4 Volt for Vref
    - swap gain 3 and 1

I have used RC4558P for IC and it works very well.
    Thank a lot

  4. Replaced 1.5K resistor to 7.5K all earned, with 4 diodes strange work, left 2. And yes the gain 321

  5. Hi, what component is the blue rectangle 10K in the right upper corner??

    1. THanks! I remove de 9k1 near the 680Ω and replace the trim with a pot B10k outside of the box, similar the voice control of the zendrive I think

  6. Good night, can you build a New layout this pedal using a pot onbord please? How you made de plexi...thank you

  8. Hi, verified. You have to correct 2 things, the gain connection that is 321 and the resistance of 1k5 that is not necessary, in some schematics it is 7k5 and in others I did not find either of them. When I used the 7k5 it gave me problems with the resistive divider because I had pop clipping distortion when I used the sixth string of the guitar, it was solved by not using any resistance in that place. greetings and thanks for the layout

  9. New Corrections that I made with some help of people who knows. In the voltage divider section, Swap 8k2 for 9k1, and in the place where the 9k1 was, put a 7k5 resistor, the 8k2 is not needed and the 1k5 that is connected to ground neither, in this way the 4.9V that is spoken in the schematics is achieved. The pedal is wonderful, Thank you very much! Effect Layouts!

  10. New Update: I test my Diy Jan Ray Vs an original and is a 85% close. All the dynamics are pretty the same but the original Jan Ray has a sweet mid range going on, and this layouts is more "transparent" like a timmy. When I have time I am going to experiment with the capacitors, to see if I can find the cutoff frequency, because the truth is that I liked the color of the original Jan Ray much more.
If I find the way, I'll post it here. Thank you very much for your blog, you are very dedicated!

    1. i verified too. used 9k1 & 7k5, resistor from gain 3k3 changes to 4k7. Mine sounding with good mid range, not so "transparent".39n used 47n, 1mf to volume = 0,47, its enough.

    2. Hi Zzoyd, You replace the 39n cap with a 47n? the resistor could change a bit the frequency response? thanks for the advise!

  13. I followed the diagram, but mine sounds "farty" and "fuzzy'...what seems to be the issue on my build? I hope I can get some advice. thanks!

  14. hey, this is the second time i try, but no sound. I got 3,95v on pin 3, 9,6v on 8, 4,34v on 6 and 7.

i follow the signal, no out on IC 2.

Is anabody already have this problem ?

  15. how can you add a DPD like on the timmy ? I try to replace D3/D4 with a dpdt like on vero version, but i seems to totaly bypass the clipping section ( it's only very clean or very fat). Any idea ? i look the pcb of timmy but don't realy understad

  16. There is a mistake on the layout that is still not corrected. Remove 1.5k and reverse gain potenciometer pins

  17. Built it using tips from other comments. It is very transparent however I find that the gain is minimal at best. Other than that everything else works as intended. Thanks once again EL.

  18. I've finished building one, but I used 100uF capacitors instead of 47uF, I replaced the 8k2 resistor and 1k5 with a 7k5 resistor, and one of the 100nF capacitors I connected to the Vref instead of Vcc. It's sound wonderful
