This is a library of perfboard and single-sided PCB effect layouts for guitar and bass. I'm not an electrical engineer by any stretch of the imagination, just a DIY'er who likes drawing layouts. It is meant for the hobbyist (so commercial use of any of these layout is not allowed without permission) and as a way to give back to the online DIY community.

Earthquaker Devices Disaster Transport

 I traced this one a while back. It's the same delay circuit as the Disaster Transport Jr but with modulation added. It fits nicely in a 1590BB like the original. Schematic here

Earthquaker Devices Hummingbird V2

 New Year, might make Modulation Monday a thing. We'll see. Anyway, here's the EQD Hummingbird V2. It's derived from the Vox Repeat Percussion and now updated to use the 2N6027 in place of the obsolete 2N2646. There's also a couple other improvements from the earlier version so a new layout seemed like a good idea. Schematic for reference.

Earthquaker Devices Special Cranker

Here's EQD's newest offering, the Special Cranker. Developed from the Speaker Cranker, this one is like two basic Electra's with switchable hard clipping diodes in between (1N60Ps like the original Speaker Cranker or Soviet germanium D9Ks). Easy fit for a 1590B.

Normally I throw a demo in, but just go look those up on YouTube, there's a bunch of them. I leave you with this vid instead. It's waay cooler anyway.

Not A Muff

Happy Fuzz Friday, all! Recently I got a request for the new EQD Hizumitas. Found a schematic for it over on FSB and it's just a BMP. The values are tweaked, but the topology is the exact same as a standard Muff. If you've hung around here for really any length of time you know how many times I've laid out the BMP. There are so many clones out there dating back to the early 70s, most of which I haven't really explored here on the blog. So using Kit Rae's fantastic Big Muff site, I put together a BOM of 6 versions of non-muffs, including the Hizumitas and the Elk Sustainar the Hizumitas is derived from. So for your building and experimenting pleasure, here's the Not A Muff. (BOM, schematic and drilling templates linked below)



Also, if you're interested in how I laid out this board, I did a livestream over on YouTube. I've been trying to do a couple streams a month of just chilling and doing some layout work in Eagle. So go and sub and all that nonsense.

EQD Black Ash

Hope everyone's having a safe and healthy Fuzz Friday. Found out the Black Ash had been traced and figured I'd draw up a layout. I figured it was a pretty straight Tone Bender Mk II clone, and it is with a simple tone control tacked on just before the volume pot. Was slightly surprised that it uses all silicon transistors. The resistors in the originals are old school carbon comps for the mojo. Here's the schematic for reference. You can probably get away with 4.7k and 47k resistors instead of the 4.6k and 46k resistors listed. Also alternatives to the 2N3903 would be 2N2222a, 2N2369, etc. Shoot for 100-150 hFE.

Earthquaker Devices Tentacle

Had several requests for the Tentacle, but it's just more or less a Dan Armstrong Green Ringer clone. But I had the idea of making a Green Ringer layout with the bypass footswitch board-mounted so we'll just call this layout the Tentacle. Should fit easily in a 1590A. If you'd rather a fabricated PCB to build on, check out the Darkmantle on the store.

EarthQuaker Devices Life Pedal

For Fuzz Friday here's the coolest Green Ringer + Rat pedal around! (To be fair, it's an awesome combo) The Green Ringer is on a JFET blend and the Rat section is pretty standard. There's also a fairly generic MOSFET boost on board as well, similar to a SHO or Black Eye. This should all fit nicely in a 1590BB with board mounted pots.

EarthQuaker Devices Plumes

Today's layout is the EQD Plumes. It's based on the Tube Screamer but with a load of tweaks, including the usual BJT buffers replaced with op amp buffers, selectable clipping, and a charge pump to provide a bipolar supply. Should fit nicely in a 1590B.

EQD Bows

Here's Jamie's take on the classic Rangemaster circuit, with a NPN germanium transistor. There's an added toggle to switch between full range and treble input caps. Probably a tight a squeeze in a 1590A but should be doable. There is also a 1590A specific PCB with board mounted pot and switch in the store now (link below).

EQD Arrows

I traced this one a while back and created the Lawn Darts PCB over on the store from it. About time I made a perf and etch layout. If a Rangemaster and an Electra ever got together and had a baby, the Arrows would be the baby. Should be an easy fit in a 1590A with the pot board mounted.

EarthQuaker Devices Dirt Transmitter

To close out EarthQuaker week, here's the Dirt Transmitter. I traced this one myself and below is a video showing the process. It's similar to a Fuzz Face, but a little different. I found this description from (I'm assuming) Jamie over on TGP:

I guess it's kinda like a fuzz face but it started as two gain stages running into each other with an input gain control and a sag on the second stage (bias). Voltage feedback was added and it became similar to a fuzz face in topology but it sounds nothing like one IMO. In this case the sound is totally dependent on the transistors, replace them and it's a whole different beast.

EarthQuaker Devices Dunes

If the Palisades is too much for you, the Dunes has a much smaller footprint and less controls to get distracted with. Pretty standard Tube Screamer clone with clipping options and a couple tone shaping switches. Might be a bit of a squeeze but it will fit in a 1590B with board mounted pots.

EarthQuaker Devices Crimson Drive (3-knob)

What? A Monday post? Yep. This week is EarthQuaker week. EQD is easily my favorite pedal company, and I own more of their pedals than any other builder. Not to mention I've learned a lot about pedal design from Jamie's work. So this week I'll be posting 3 EQD circuits and hopefully a video to go along with this week's Fuzz Friday.

To kick EarthQuaker week off, here's the now discontinued Crimson Drive. Did the 2-knob version ages ago, but the 3-knob version was recently posted on FSB so I gave it an update. Beyond the addition of the tone control, there's a few capacitors removed compared to the 2-knob version. The germanium transistor is also different–an NPN instead of the PNP–and the germanium transistors were swapped from 1N60Ps to 1N34As. Easy fit in a 1590B with board mounted pots.

For the blog's 600th layout, here's a new one that didn't take long to get traced. Here's EQD's newest offering, the Westwood Translucent Drive Manipulator. Great for pushing your amp and giving a near clean boost. It features an active 2-band EQ and sounds great on bass as well as guitar.

Earthquaker Devices Disaster Transport Jr.

Here's EQD's take on PT2399 delay. The most unique thing about it probably the use of a Big Muff-like tone stack. It will definitely fit best in a 125B with the board mounted pots, but if you use long leg board mounted pots and populate them from the component side it should fit in a 1590B. EarthQuaker Devices Erupter

Merry Fuzz Friday, everyone! Here's EQD's latest fuzz offering, the Erupter. Essentially it's a JFET buffer into a pickup sim (the transformer) into a Fuzz Face-esque circuit. The Bias control controls the amount of voltage going to Q3 and is a center detent pot (though a regular B10k pot will work just fine). This one might benefit by adding a volume control to the output. Should fit in a 1590B just fine. The 2N497 transistor might be hard to source, but other low gain transistors should work. Earthquaker Devices Palisades

The mother of all TS808 derivatives/variants, the Palisades incorporates just about every mod to the classic Tube Screamer circuit. Two rotary switches control the bass response (Bandwidth) and clipping (Voice), one toggle bypasses the input buffer while the other is a bright switch, a footswitch selects between 2 separate gain pots, and with an added boost section to round it all off. All 5 pots are board mounted, but there will still be a good bit of off board wiring. Schematic can be found over on FSB. It's laid out for a 1790NS enclosure just like the original.

Earthquaker Devices Chrysalis

Another oldie but goodie from EQD. The Chrysalis (now discontinued) is essentially a Speaker Cranker (with a pre-gain control instead of its normal gain control) into a Rat-style tone control, followed by a LPB-1 for gain recovery. Schematic can be found on FSB.
