Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer

The TS808 layout I post a while back has always bugged me. It's a real tight squeeze in a 1590B and I wanted a Tube Screamer layout with onboard pots. Well, I finally drew one up and I like this one. It's laid out for the TS9, but all it takes is 2 resistor swaps to go to TS808 specs (see the layout for info there). For board mounted pots, as per usual, right angle PCB pots can be mounted from the solder side of the board.

  1. Probably I'm making a dumb mistake, but I can't verify this. All I get is a crazy farting tone, sounds like ass and I'll take some days off from debuging it, because I'm pissed hehe

    1. I went back and double checked it. I had forgotten the 10k resistor from 9v to Bias. *facepalm It's fixed now.

    2. hahahaha, I'm not that bad at building pedals, then. I just need to check it with the schematics more often. I'm about to verify it!

    1. Your video says you built it from the Tonepad layout. Why are you posting it here?

I tested the circuit today and it worked. It's a very good tone!

  5. Hello there!
I think there is a tiny mistake in the ready to transfer image. One of the holes of the 51pf cap is missing isn't it?
Great site by da way. I have to send photos some day! :)

  6. Can I use this to make a clay jones OD replica? or are the LED pads not there?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The Clay Jones OD uses 3mm LEDs instead of the typical 1N4148s, so the layout isn't set up for LEDs, but it won't be a problem to squeeze them in there. Otherwise the only difference between the TS9/808 and the Clay Jones is just a handful of component values. The "topography" of the circuit is the same, so you shouldn't have any issues.

    2. Thanks, man. I'll give it a shot.

    3. You'll need a couple different sizes. I use one of these stepped bits. Works much better than typical twist bits. Best to measure your own components before drilling.

  7. Hi! I just came across a topic on freestompboxes forum and converting the TS9 to 808 takes more than 2 resistors as I understand. I guess they are refering to the Tonepad's layout but I wanted to make sure as I'd like to use your layout because I'm such a loyal DIYer :) You can check it out here: http://www.freestompboxes.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=22777
They also mention a capacitor change and the direction of diodes. I'm not sure it will make a difference but I wanted to take your opinion.

    1. Yeah, that's referencing the TonePad board, which you can build the TS-808, TS-9, and Boss SD-1 on. I believe the cap in question isn't even populated for the Tube Screamers, and diode direction doesn't matter. That would only matter if you're using asymmetrical clipping, which is what the SD-1 uses (though it's a common mod to the TS circuit, by my layout doesn't really allow for it). So, long story short, the only difference between the 808 and the 9 are those 2 resistors. Good luck with your build and thanks for the loyalty! :D

  9. What kind of switch I need to change between ts808 and ts9? I mean, use the switch to change the resistors of the two models...
    Thanks!

    1. You can use a DPDT on/on and wire it like this:

  12. Hi... the volume level does not increase enough, it seems that the clean sound is higher than the distorted, is it possible? What can you do to overcome this?

  14. I cant find any 1uf mylar capacitor.is it possible to use 1uf elco caps for this.?not really sure how to put them in this board.i mean the polarity orientation.
Thank you for the great upload.

    1. The caps don't have to be mylar, but they do need to be non-polarized.

  15. Sorry for the question, but how do I turn on the switch switch?

  16. Just one more thing...
In case I want to use a switch that alternates between asymmetric and symmetric diodes. Could you tell me how to make this connection?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Wire diodes to a DPDT like in this layouts (just replace the two LEDs with an asymmetric diode array) and wire the 2 middle lugs of the switch to one of the places where diodes are on the board (and don't populate the diodes on the board if you're putting them on a switch).

      I can use different diodes?

  17. The IC is using TL072 or JRC4558 ?
I read that they are interchangeable, but how about the sound?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, you can use just about any dual opamp. But the sound may be slightly different with each. This is why I generally suggest to use a socket so you can try out different chips.

  19. Bom dia!!!

  20. May I use 33nF instead of 27nF? Or will it lead to worse sound quality?

  21. Ho guys!
    Help!
the circuit works well for a few minutes then starts making noise until it no longer works.
    Some idea?!?

    And also, i can't find the 51pF cap, so can i use a 47pF?

  25. What size pots do you use for onboard? 16mm don’t match the template no matter how I place them, either side

  26. I'm finding the transfer image is a bit pixelated, and the size isn't quite right. Can you post this as a PDF or other better quality file? I built your 1590B Big Muff project, and the image quality was much better on that one. TIA!
