This is a library of perfboard and single-sided PCB effect layouts for guitar and bass. I'm not an electrical engineer by any stretch of the imagination, just a DIY'er who likes drawing layouts. It is meant for the hobbyist (so commercial use of any of these layout is not allowed without permission) and as a way to give back to the online DIY community.

Zvex Box of Rock

This layout is for the distortion side of the Box of Rock. The Boost side is just a SHO. I've laid this effect out for top mounted pots like in my other Zvex layouts and should fit vertically in a 1590B. Pots are 1.1 inches (28mm) apart.

Board dimensions: 3.2 x 1 in. or 81.3 x 25.4 mm

    3. Made today, wiring ok, including that of the pots, but it doesn't work. I read that it may depend on the mosfet but I tried 5 BS170, 20 2N7000 and their combinations too but it doesn't work and I don't even have the right voltages on the mosfets. I read that there must be about 4.5v on the drains but I find this voltage only in the Q3 drain.
      Any suggestions from anyone ? Thanks !

  3. An observation. In some schemes I have seen that the 56nf capacitor is 1uf.
    What is the reason for this difference?

    1. It's a coupling cap: not a big deal.
      I guess the difference between them aren't too much noticiable.
      Maybe less muddy/a bit more bright with the 56nf?

  4. Hi, how do you think, increasing the value of both 2nf capacitors right before the output will increase the low frequency in this pedal? I want to make a bass version, I'm about to increase the value for the input cap to 220 or 470nf, the 56nf cap to 1uf or 2.2uf, I also increased all 22nf caps to 33nf, and now I'm wondering if increasing the value for that two 2nf caps will make a positive difference because I don't really understand their role. Thank you so much!

    1. Those 2nF caps are to bleed some treble off the output. It may work fine without modifying those cap values, but if you find you've got too much treble, increase the value of those two.

      I have build it. Its working but most of the gain is from 3 o clock to Max.

    2. Nothing will happen, quite the contrary: that 1M resistor prevents, is a bias resistor to ground (not a pcb error; check the schematic).
      Try a C5K potentiometer for Gain; is a normal sweep in this schematic when using linear pots

  7. Works and sounds fine. The only issue is the gain pot does nothing until about midway. Should lug 1 be connected to ground?

  8. My mistake, I used a log instead of anti log. makes all the difference. I didnt connect lug 1 but i dont think it makes any difference. now i'm really happy with it. thanks once again.
