This is a library of perfboard and single-sided PCB effect layouts for guitar and bass. I'm not an electrical engineer by any stretch of the imagination, just a DIY'er who likes drawing layouts. It is meant for the hobbyist (so commercial use of any of these layout is not allowed without permission) and as a way to give back to the online DIY community.

Maestro FZ-1B Fuzztone (2 transistor version)

This was (I believe) the 3rd iteration of Maestro's Fuzztone fuzz pedal. The first 2 used germanium transistors and AA batteries. This marked the changed to silicon transistors and a 9v battery. Originals had 2N3860 transistors, but 2N2222s or 2N3904s would probably work just fine. Couldn't find any info on the diode, so socket and experiment. I also couldn't find any demos of the 2 transistor version (there is also a 4 transistor version of the FZ-1B), so you'll just have to make it to find out!

  2. This one's 1.8" wide and 1.1" tall. The Bosstone is 1.8" wide and 0.85" tall

  4. Have you followed the scheme of Andrew Carrel for this design? Do you know if the original scheme works or is there an error?

    1. I drew this up 4 years ago, but if memory servers I think it was Andrew's schematic I used. I don't know if the original schematic is accurate. I know there are some old Maestro schems that are inaccurate. The layout is verified though.

  5. I would like to know if anyone who has built this circuit, what transistor did you use. I'm unable to source the 2N3860.

  6. Ha, I must have missed the part about using 2N2222 or 2N3904, WHICH I have in my bin. I tried a 5817 diode and 2n2222'S. Sounds real nice. I verify also. Thank you.

  8. The FZ-1b is a 4 transistor circuit that uses a dual gang pot for the output balance. This circuit is very different to the FZ-1b, although the FZ-1b uses silicon devices. I just repaired an original FZ-1b that I'm going to clone. I found this page looking for info on others attempts.
