This is a library of perfboard and single-sided PCB effect layouts for guitar and bass. I'm not an electrical engineer by any stretch of the imagination, just a DIY'er who likes drawing layouts. It is meant for the hobbyist (so commercial use of any of these layout is not allowed without permission) and as a way to give back to the online DIY community.

Creepy Fingers FuzzBud
Here's a great sounding one-knob fuzz from Creepy Fingers Effects for your FuzzFriday. It's based on the fuzz section of the Colorsound Fuzz-Wah and follows the basic structure of the Fuzz Face, just with a fixed resistor in place of the fuzz control. Shouldn't be hard at all to fit in a 1590a enclosure.

ReplyDeleteIt's a fuzz face derivative, so I'd start with a higher hfe on Q2 then experiment a bit.

ReplyDeleteBuilt this but with 50k pot even at very little it is very very loud. So i cant get much range. if i turn it all the way it has no output but touch the pot even a little and it roars is there a way to control this to get some range that i can use.
Did you try any different pots? Increasing the value should give it better range. Try 100k or 500k
Deleteusing a bigger value pot seems to have no effect at all. correct me if im wrong but would using a smaller value pot allow more signal to be shunted to ground that lowering the overall output?

ReplyDeleteThe 1k resistor off the emitter of Q2. Though you'll probably want to remove the 10uF cap that's in parallel with the 1k resistor and run it between lugs 1 and 2 of a fuzz pot (negative lead going to lug 1 of the pot).
DeleteI have verified this pedal as working..I used a B-250k pot . I made 2 of them first one with vintage can style transistors and second with modern plastic ones. I think the old can style sound better. what is the difference if any? am i wrong? also the only other difference would be a 1.2m resistor instead of 1m i was out? would that make the sound "thinner" it seems lacking in some way compared to the other one with can caps? thanks for any response. peace
ReplyDeleteThe 1M resistor is just the pulldown resistor so your footswitch doesn't pop, so using a large resistor isn't hurting anything. What's you're likely experiencing is the tolerance in caps. Most film caps have a 5-10% tolerance and ceramics around 10% or higher, meaning that the value will be with that percentage range. So between your two builds some of the caps may have been on the lower end of that range and others on the higher end. That'd be my guess anyway

DeleteI would expect some variance between metal can and plastic packages, but again, nothing too out of the ordinary. All BJTs regardless of package have an acceptable range of hFE that will vary from transistor to transistor. All that to say, the transistors will play a role in the difference between the two, but I would think the capacitors play a larger role.
