This is a library of perfboard and single-sided PCB effect layouts for guitar and bass. I'm not an electrical engineer by any stretch of the imagination, just a DIY'er who likes drawing layouts. It is meant for the hobbyist (so commercial use of any of these layout is not allowed without permission) and as a way to give back to the online DIY community.

The Photon Buzzard

I stumbled across this over on DIYstompboxes. It was designed by David Edgar and it's kind of based on the Fuzz Face circuit, but with a lot of tweaks. Below is his schematic and notes on biasing and transistor selection. I've added the usual polarity protection and power filtering and drawn the layout for on-board pots if you so choose.

  1. Verified using two BC550 transistors.

The original DIYstompboxes thread doesn't have the original notes or schematic anymore. Pink Jimi Photon's vero layout had a note on trimmer adjustment, though:

"Turn P1 and P2 to their middle position. Play your instrument, and turn the trimmer until you get the least amount of sound. It should sound extremely "squeezed". This should give you the best useful range of interaction out of P1 and P2."

At the "squeezed" midpoint of the Phase knob, you get a pinched fuzz and a volume drop. Turning the Phase knob either way from there fills the sound out, with clockwise sounding chewy and aggressive, counter-clockwise sounding mellower and quieter. The fuzz is always gated and at least a little glitchy, no matter how the controls are set.
