The Incandenza Bypass is a simple, low parts count, relay-based true bypass circuit designed by Steve Demedash. It uses a normally open momentary SPST footswitch triggering a simple 555-based flip flop circuit, triggering a non-latching DPDT footswitch. The layout below reflects the pinout of the either the Takamisawa NA5W-K or Omron G6S-2 relays. These are 2 relays I had in my parts stash that worked with the circuit when I breadboarded it and are both rated at 5v. Other non-latching relays can be used, but double check the pinouts and compare datasheets. Schematic can be found here.
This is a library of perfboard and single-sided PCB effect layouts for guitar and bass. I'm not an electrical engineer by any stretch of the imagination, just a DIY'er who likes drawing layouts. It is meant for the hobbyist (so commercial use of any of these layout is not allowed without permission) and as a way to give back to the online DIY community.

ReplyDeleteCouldn't find a datasheet so took a punt... Bypasses fine. LED lights up when switched on but no audio. Tested with 2 working effects, same result. Guessing it's the relay. Cheers for this. Will get shopping for parts!

ReplyDeleteBut! I really don't recommend it, since it produces huge voltage spikes when turned on or off. Voltage spikes reach 1-2vpp and are very audible sometimes. Tried with multiple ne555s

DeleteHey, circuit designer here - can you be more specific about where the voltage spikes are happening? I've never had this issue and none of the builders I shared this circuit with before making it public reported anything like that either.

DeleteI've measured dem spikes on the VCC. To be fair, my psu was floating and nicely filtered and had somewhat 200uf cap on the input. I also should note that i've measured them with different relays (omron, takamisawa, nec).
I guess, there should be some sort of overvoltage clamp, like a zener diode or whatever. I'm a bit messed up right now and can't remember all the details.

With a 5v relay don't you need to add a voltage regulator to the circuit?

DeleteWait, really? I thought the datasheet specified max of 200% voltage applied to the coil, that should be aprox 10 volts, not 30.
Applying 30v volts will burn the crap out of 5v rated relay (na5w and omron gs6).
Even operating at close to max vcc is quite bad for the relay and can affect it's life.
I think, 5v reg is pretty mandatory for a proper long life.
I got some problem with this... I can't using battery, only adaptor.. Cause the circuit need bigger power...

ReplyDelete-I wanted to use the circuits Send/In parts to toggle the boost section of 7th heaven. When I connected the circuit, It somehow shorted the pedal. Than again I used a mechanical dpdt on that place.
Using other chip than ne555 (LM, LMC, ICM) will fix the noise problem, caused by ne555 shitty current spikes and coupling. Don't use ne555 ever.

DeleteHave tried LM555CN instead of NE but I hear no difference regarding switching noise, it’s just the same loud pop. I think it has to do with the relay. Too bad! If someone knows the solution to fix this without extra circuitry please let us know.

The NA12W-K needs at least 9v across the coil to work, depending on what your power source is it might not work. If you ran it at 12v I think it would be fine.
DeleteI've made a bunch of these circuits and strangely the only 555 that will work is the LM555CN. I have a bunch of TL555s and NE555s and have not been able to get a single one to work, while the LM555s always work. Taking the relay out of the circuit lets the NE and TL 555s turn the LED on and off, but as soon as the relay is included it seems like it is causing the flip-flop to stop changing states. Any ideas on what may be happening? I'm using Takamisawa NA5W-K relays. Tired of overpaying Mouser for LM555s when I can get NE555s from Tayda by the bucketload.

DeleteI've been using this bypass and I'm liking the results, mainly because it doesn't have pop and it's smooth to turn on / off, I'd like to solve a doubt, I have a volume pedal that uses this bypass, but it's passive so I use it to lower the volume and when I want the guitar to become louder I turn off the volume, how do I invert the led in this circuit, so that it stays lit when the bypass is off? grateful
