Run Off Groove Azabache

Not sure how/why I avoided laying this one out for so long. The Azabache is a great sounding overdrive that emulates classic Fender amps. Check out the ROG article on the circuit for more info, schematic and sound demos. Adjust the trimmers so there's 6v on the drain of Q1, and 5v on the drains of Q2-4. You should be able to squeeze it into a 1590B.

  2. This one was difficult to put together, the tracks are so close to each other it made me feel like a neurosurgeon. I had to use 250V poly caps to make things worse. But it worked beautifully and it will fit in a 1590B, your layouts are amazing, thanks, bro!
I'm afraid I got a bad batch of 2n5457s, couldn't find one which I could bias at 6V (9.8V from my power supply), I've checked and measured the resistor values before soldering, breadboarded after and had no success. Replaced it with a J201 and got 6.5V. The values I need to bias my 5457s at 6V are all above 220K, so... any ideas?

    1. Legit through hole 5457s are hard to come by these days. You probably just got some that are out of spec. I've pretty much given up on through hole 5457s and J201s and just use SMD converter boards.

  3. I didn't want to put this one to sleep, so after trying some different transistors I finnaly got it working right. All my 5457 had really low Vp (around 0.3V), so I had to switch to a 2n5458 at Q1 and it did improve a lot. Also, Q2 and Q4 were switched to those crazy 5457's and this thing now have an insane amount of gain. Great range of cool tones, loved it! Once again, thanks for the layout!
