This is a library of perfboard and single-sided PCB effect layouts for guitar and bass. I'm not an electrical engineer by any stretch of the imagination, just a DIY'er who likes drawing layouts. Taptation

Want to add tap tempo to a PT2399 delay? Using this chip from DIYSB and the layout below, you can add tap to any single PT2399 delay (Deep Blue Delay, Rebote, Faux Analog Echo, etc). The Pin 6 pad connects to the 6th pin of the PT2399, and the LED flashes at the rate of the tap.

  1. 20$ for chip is too much for me. I own a long time ago very good "All PIC Programmer", so, can i use PIC16F684 microcontroller (1$ peace) & proper HEX files (that I already found on internet) for programming & making this "Taptation IC"?
Also i need "SPST momentary footswitch" for "Tap1 & Tap2" connection?

    1. You're correct regarding the switch. I don't know how well you'll be able to replicate the Taptation IC programming. That really comes down to your own skill in that department. This project is for someone who's looking to add a tap tempo function to a new build without having to get into programming themselves.

    2. Judging by this site: http://electricdruid.net/tap-tempo-lfo-taplfo-v2d/ i think it might be feasible? :)

    3. Is it possible to use this layout with elctrodruids TAPLFO?

    4. Jiomy - no, TAPLFO outputs waveforms to control tremolo style effects and stuff.

    6. So, this TAPFLO (PIC 16F684) chip, it cannot be used with Deep Blue Delay?

    7. TAPLFO is the same things as taptation imho...when you use TAPLFO with IC MC41100 (digital pot) it could be OK :) But i dont try it yet. But u will need new PCB...pinout of TAPLFO is not same

  2. This is mine Deep Blue Delay clone (box made from hawthorn tree): http://www.upslike.net/imgdb/delay-20fe8b.jpg
Now it is a little inconvenient to add this fourth 100K pot on the box and aone more footswitch.. hmmm..

    1. You'd have to build a new sweet wooden box ;) And just in case it's not clear, the pot in the layout replaces the Time pot in whatever circuit you're adding this to.

  3. Also I have a bad experience with the Taptation chip. I bought one from Aron at diystompboxes which was a painless experience, but the tapped delay was always markedly faster than what I tapped in. I tried numerous sources of PT2399 and multiple digipots. Essentially useless now. Has anyone else had trouble with this sort of thing?

  4. Hi Charles,

same experience here. I even got the taptation chip replaced- no use.

I am still waiting for a new solution to pop up, because I have a nice etched eclosure ready....

  5. Hi, You can use this? http: //html.alldatasheet.com/html-pdf/537928/MICROCHIP/MCP41100ISLASHP/494/1/MCP41100ISLASHP.html ??? remolcar IC MCP41100 Y MC42100.?

  6. today i build this, connected to wampler faux analog echo... but nothing happen, time led always on not blink, time pot no respon, footswitch also not respon.... my last asking, what IC for taptation PIC16F684 or PIC16F688 ? is this same ? thank u

  7. i think it must be PIC16F88 cannot use PIC16F684... is it right ?

  8. Hello guy
Do I have to buy your chip?
Is not there a chip on the market that is easier to find?

  9. Buying the TAPTATION IC on AliExpress... do I need to program it? Or I can connect it to the PCB and starts working?

  11. Hi, sorry for my question, I'm a beginner, which is pin 6?

    1. This is a daughter board for adding to a PT2399-based delay (lots of those out there). The pin 6 in question is not on this board, but on the delay board.

  12. hello it seems that im a lot active these days :)
    im getting ready my board
cuz the one site that has taptation ic on stock they does not ship to my country or those that ship 20$ for the ic + shiping the price goes up in sky
what can i use as replacement

    1. Unfortunately not much, the Taptation chip is an Attiny (presumably Attiny84) with custom code written on it. The chip is widely available, what you're actually paying for from Taptation is the code that's burned into the chip. I don't think you can get around that without writing the code yourself.

    2. Hello, I'm making an arduino tap tempo, if it ends up working well enough I can send you the code.

  15. Just built this and put it on a Disaster Transport Jr. Clone and it works a treat! You can mark it as verified.

  16. I built this but I’m not sure if get rid of the delay pot on the standard build or if I keep and have four knobs. I don’t know if that’s a dumb question or not.
