Got a request for a headphone amp, "for those of us who hit their peak inspiration when everyone's asleep." Being guilty myself of waking up my 1 year old son with a Peavey Classic 50 with the volume only at 2, I thought this was an excellent idea. So here's ROG's Ruby–a 386-based amplifier that can easily fit in a 1590A, or even an Altoids tin. Check out the ROG article on the circuit for more info and a couple of mods.
This is a library of perfboard and single-sided PCB effect layouts for guitar and bass. I'm not an electrical engineer by any stretch of the imagination, just a DIY'er who likes drawing layouts. It is meant for the hobbyist (so commercial use of any of these layout is not allowed without permission) and as a way to give back to the online DIY community.

ReplyDeletewith stereo and mono out, Modification "Bassman", but with gain pot.
DeleteNice!
DeleteWhats the "bassman" modification?
DeleteWhat should I do with speaker + and -?
ReplyDeleteSilly question though..
You wire them to the + and - of a speaker or a jack to connect to headphones.
Deleteaw thanks man
Deleteone more. so the output is mono?
DeleteYes.
Deletewhich the power of the speaker ?
ReplyDeleteHow do you do those transfers with just contours (lower right in the image above)?
ReplyDeleteSo I can directly plug headphones to speaker connection without worry about headphones?
ReplyDeleteI think so, yes.
DeleteHi! Is a good amp for the guitar? Is good for imput Analog pedals? 8om speaker is good? My english is too bad... I Hope you understand.
ReplyDeleteYou are the best electronic man!
Yes, you can run pedals into it and will work fine as a low wattage amp. Not sure about the speaker ohms, but 8 is probably fine.
DeleteThanks.. Is valid the lm380? Or thE tda7052? Thanks again
DeleteCan it be used for an electric bass?
ReplyDeleteThank you.
Greetings from Chile
anyone tried with a speaker? any good result? i've tried with a 8 ohm and a 22ohm little crappy speakers, and there's almost no sound
ReplyDeleteits a 1watt amp..you should try 4ohms or 2ohms..maybe it would sound better..the smaller the resistance of a speaker the louder it gets..but also tends to distort a lot..
DeleteI have 1000uf capacitors left over, I can put them in place of those being used in ruby (100uf and 220uf)
ReplyDeleteYou could for the 100uF, but I'd stick with the stock value for the 220uF cap.
DeleteVerified! Works great.
ReplyDeleteFor volume pot, can use 20K value?
ReplyDeleteYou can try it, or solder a 20k resistor from lug 1 to lug 3 which will turn the reduce the pot's value to 10k.
DeleteIs 220 for dc block?
ReplyDeleteWhats the value that can be used for dc block?
only one earphone sounds, how do I make them both sound?
ReplyDeleteThe Ruby is a mono amp: it only gives 1 output "channel", so to say. Try building a TDA2822 amp if you want a true stereo sound, or 2 Ruby amps so you get 2 channels.
DeleteI solved it with a stereo jack
DeleteIf one were to put in an on/off switch, how would that be wired? Between the 9v and the ground?
ReplyDeleteJust cut the VCC line: solder the positive lug of your VCC to the switch, and the output of the switch to where VCC would be connected on the board. That way, when switching it off, it's simply not powered; then you switch it on and it has power.
DeleteCan you use a J201 instead of the 2N5457? Got J201 on TO-92 package. Either way, got both J201 and 2N5457 on SOT-23 package, so it's not like I cannot use them. Just asking to see if a J201 can replace the 2N5457. TIA!
ReplyDeleteYeah that should be fine.
