Earthquaker Devices Hoof Reaper

It's the last Fuzz Friday before Christmas, and as a present to you here's 3 effects in one–the Earthquaker Hoof Reaper. It combines the Tone Reaper fuzz, the Green Ringer (Tentacle) octave, and Hoof fuzz in one package. For the germanium transistors, originals use an AC176 in the Reaper side and 1N1308s in the Hoof, but others can (and have) been used, so socket and experiment. Also, it seems the originals have the Octave first from the input jack. So despite the footswitch arrangement, the signal goes, Input jack > Octave > Reaper > Hoof > Output Jack. Pots are all board mounted and it should fit in a 1590BB.

Hope everyone has a great holiday!

  5. Where's the best place to acquire some of this "perf" you speak of? Salvage yard? Do I have to rob the embassy? Seriously though, I get my vero from tippikat on ebay, but have no idea where to score some good perf.

    1. eBay is ok too. I bought a bunch of super cheap 'prototype board' from there - it's bad, but I mean... if you don't ever plan on changing part values it's generally pretty good. The traces wouldn't hold up with any serious heating.

  6. MPSA19 is a typo? ...as the tone reaper has a MPSA18

  8. What effect does the 100pf cap have on the tone of the octave pedal on its own? Compared to the green ringer, I think that's the only difference. What does it do?

    1. I guess it's some form of low pass filter... Though 100pf is pretty low for that. If you built it without it I doubt you'd really notice its absence.

    1. I listed the original germanium transistors in the post above. BC108 is a silicon transistor btw.

I plan to make octave section switchable w a relay and foot controller, since there s not enough space in this enclosure for 3rd button

    cheers

  11. Hello, the 3dpdt switches connect each one in a normal way or you have to connect them between them ????

    1. Input jack goes to the Octave 3PDT in, then run the Octave 3PDT out to the Reaper 3PDT in, then run the Reaper 3PDT out to the Hoof 3PDT in, and the Hoof 3PDT out to the output jack.

    2. Many thanks, 9v and ground power should also go to each section of the pedal, that is to say every 3dpd switch?
      Sorry for my ignorance.
      Thank you very much

  16. Anyone knows where to buy a Hoof Reaper kit?

  17. I built this a while back, and really really like the "Reaper" side of the pedal, however the "Hoof" side is very dark no matter where I put the shift and tone knobs. Any suggestions for components to focus on?

  18. Hello, I used the germanium 2SD30 by sanyo, and it works perfectly.
According to the seller these others also would work: AC127, AC176, AC187, 2SD72, 2N2430, MP38A. Someone tested these?
    Thanks.
