Here's the Band of Gypsys Fuzz Face from Dunlop for Fuzz Friday. Despite being called a Fuzz Face, the actual circuitry of the Band of Gypsys version isn't even close to the original Fuzz Face. It's pretty close to an Octavia without the transformer. Here's the schematic for reference.
Kinda doubt this is why your fuzz pot isn't working, but the BC550 is an NPN transistor and Q1 is supposed to be a PNP... You could have a bad pot or have a short somewhere in that area.
Great layout! The sound is very high, even with the volume close to the minimum, I tried several transitors, but the combination of BC558 or 2N3906 plus the MPSA18 for me is the best, now I'm testing with BC558 and BC109C, and the sound is more open, also not bad at all.
Tried a couple combinations and finally stuck with the BC560 and 3904. The MPSA18 were way to distorted, if you're trying to get that Hendrix sound. And the 3906, on the other hand, tamed too much the fuzz. Compared to the axis fuzz, it has a little more bottom, and a lot more volume. It cleans good, but lacks a little of that chime sound as you roll the volume down (remember it's not a FF). Nice fuzz, though.
This will beautiful beast, if you use germanium transistors.i used Q1 hfe=50, Q2 hfe=60, Q3 hfe=85! Q3 try silicon with hfe150-650 if you want, you will get differents resaults. Dont forget to change bias resistor 220к from base Q2. I used 100k for norm opening.
Hi!, i'm needing a little hand, i've built it but getting a lot of hiss and there is vey low gain, and only the bass goes trough. I've used the 558 for q1 and 549 for q2 and q3
bc550c for bc558???
ReplyDelete550 es NPN, el esquema muestra un PNP. 558 está bien.
DeleteMost excellent! i was planning on reworking my octavia today for a better fuzz tone but i'll skip it and make this if i have any perf.
ReplyDelete- estaban, the transistor in that position has to be a pnp like a 2n5087 or 2n4402
the bc557 or bc560 try are pnp, thanks!! Excellent layout !!!
DeleteThis one works! I used a 2n5087 and two 2n5089's
ReplyDeleteplease video!!! sounds similar video?
Deletei'll try to make a video. i have to either put different transistors for the npn's or bias it a bit more because it is slightly gated
DeleteThanks for verifying!
DeleteBuilt. I did not expect such high gain, thank you. You were following the FSB thread? It's certainly not a Fuzz face and I love the sound.
ReplyDeletehola! este fuzz no es con positivo a masa no?
ReplyDeleteNo oscar lo alimentas tranqui negativo al centro!
DeleteI use a BC550 and 2 MPSA18, But I have problems with the fuzz potentiometer, at min and max sound the same :/.

DeleteThanks a lot, I replaced the BC550 for 2n3906 and now it sounds really well

ReplyDeletethe original pedal has two mps3904 and one bc560

ReplyDeletecan i use bc177 for q1?
