Four Step Atari Punk Console

I thought I'd mix things up a little this week and post some synth circuits people might be interested in. To start things out, here's a modified version of the classic Atari Punk Console. This has a few additional potentiometers for more control and a more versatile version of this popular synth.


In the layout below note that VR stands for variable resistor as the schematic I laid this out from didn't have names for each control (there are 6, labeled A through F).



Pardon all the jumpers, 555s are uncooperative for single sided layouts. Haha

    1. Its pretty straight forward. Each VR is a pot. VR_A 1 would be pin one on pot VR_A. I don't think there is a pretty way to do this layout with all the off board controls. Just jump in head first and wire it up. I look forward to seeing your build.

    2. Hi, thank you for your answer.. I've tried it and it works... but not all of the potentiometers seem to be working.
      On your layout, the VR_A for example, where it says: VR_A 2/3. is it pint 2 connected to pin 3 and both to the correspondent input / little hole?

    3. Yes, jumper lugs 2 and 3 on the pot with a wire, component cut off, whatever you prefer... Then run a wire from that connection to the 2/3 pad.

  6. I got this working, my only complaint is that the frequency pot only seems to have about 25% of usable frequency as I turn it before it becomes a low grumble that has no different sounds from the other pots. Any tips?

    1. You could try using a lower value pot and probably a log/audio taper pot.

    1. i have also designed a PCB to avoid all the wiring on this project. You can connect both pcb´s with header pins and some jumper wire as shown on the picture attached on link below

    A few questions:

    what is the output level? line-instrument-headphone?
    What value for the pots is advised?
    Changing the diodes for LED's is ok?

  14. one last question, if I would make 2 of these and let them run in sync to create a polyphonic sound.
    My guess is to make one of them master and send the timing pulse from 1 APC to the other at pin 14 of the 4017IC.
    Am I correct?

    In order to make it 8 step, I should bridge pin 9 and 15 and double the "tone" citcuits?
