The power filtering on this seems a bit extreme to me, but I've laid it out with the stock 1000µ and 220µ caps from 9v to ground, and 220µ and 22µ caps from 4.5v to ground. If you don't have some of those values on hand, try lower ones. Also, the pot numbering may have been reversed from normal on the schematic I drew this from, so be warned.
Thanks a bunch for this one! I'm not really a metal player these days, but always wanted to add this one to my collection!
ReplyDeleteYou bet, buddy! Now go build it and take pictures :D
Deletehahahaha, I'll finish my Sabbra Cadabra first, it's almost done!
ReplyDeletehi can use other transistor for Q2 >
ReplyDeleteWell, the J117 is a P-channel mosfet, so I would socket Q2 and try whatever P-channel mosfet you have access to.
DeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteDone, masiv sound, greate noise gate. Q2 J177. There are one mistake on the PCB but ease to fix. Res 1M from Q2 - S must be connect to Q2 - G and 1 pin of TL072P connect to Q2 - S. If it is not clear then pls. check on the schematics.
Martin
Did it not work with the 1M only connected to the source of Q2? In the schematic I used, component junctions are shown with a dot and there wasn't a dot connecting that 1M to the gate of Q2.

Built it. Everything works apart from after a while the sound fades out to nothing. Comes back sometimes when I strike the strings. Not as much volume as I expected either.
DeleteAny ideas?
Sounds like a biasing issue maybe? Are you getting half voltage on the VR trace? (Orange trace)
DeleteRebuilt it and don't get the fade out of the sound any more so that was another issue. The volume of the pedal is still very quiet and I have to turn my amp volume right up. The amp turned up without effect is loud. Orange vr trace reads 4.5 volts all along.
DeleteThanks for your help.
Sorted out. Used J175, Source and Gate on JFET Soldered together. 2N2222A for Q1. Pin 1 of IC to source and gate.
DeleteThanks
I agree with Marcin, I had to do some creative wiring to get it to work. Even with the J117, the pinout doesn't match the board. Works great though and sounds amazing. I love this site. I've built a lot off here and this is the first issue I've had.
DeleteBase on my last post there are no mistake on PCB. I use J177 and it has diferent pins like J117.
ReplyDeleteIs it possible to replace the j117 with IRF9630 ?
ReplyDeleteI'm not familiar with the IRF9630. Compare the data sheets online.
DeleteI replacing the transistors
ReplyDeleteQ1 - 2N222A
Q2 - 2SJ117
Work well?
I think those should be fine.
Deletethe pcb has an error? is true?
ReplyDeleteI don't believe so. I've check it to the schematic several times and everything checks out.
DeleteThank you very much fod this pcb and other work, You do a great job. :)

The pcb is correct, i build mine with J177 for noise gate section, i replace with J175 but doesn't work well. so i back to original J177 and my problem is gone :). The noise gate is great, all noises is reduce perfectly but my problem is it's sound click every i start to picking guitar string. Any advice? Thank's :)
ReplyDeleteNo idea why you'd be getting that click. You might want to ask some of the pedal gurus on your pedal forum of choice.
DeleteThe transistor should be a J177 not J117. It was an expensive mistake for me but never mind, I freakin love this site.
ReplyDeleteThe schematic here says J177. http://radiostorage.net/uploads/Image/schemes/effectpr/morpheus-g2d-scheme.jpg
I bought some FQP3P50s, (J117 equivalent) and then when I was building the pinout didn't match the layout, I then checked the J117 pinout and that also didn't match so I had to do some funk. Anyways, it didnt work, I've probed it and I'm getting signal all the way to the PNP tranny so I've ordered a J177 and hoping that will fix it.
Please do the fOXX Phaser as used by Brian May in the 70s.. Best sounding phaser I've used and my layout is shocking!! http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=110315.0
In case someone wants to build this and runs into problems.
ReplyDeleteI built this a while ago and I did have some problems.
Here's how I fixed them:
- J177 for Q2.
- Used a jumper on the solder side and connected the S/source of the J177 to pin 1 of the TL072 on the right.
That fixed all my problems and now the pedal works well and sounds really good.
Thanks!

ReplyDelete?
I should have no problem substituting the 1000uf for a 470uf, correct?
ReplyDeleteYeah. The original power filtering is a bit excessive.

DeleteI just finished my build, and although it does work it's got extreme low volume. Does anyone know what could case that? It's really faint.

ReplyDeleteIs there an error in the pcb? and how similar it is in sound to the video in the video it sounds brutal.
I ordered 5, J177 smd jfets I will have to use veroboard with pins to attach the fet to the pcb, will I still have to run a jumper from IC2 pin 1 to source on the FET also someone above suggested s&g should be connected. Need clarification otherwise it's half verified.some conflicting advice mosfet -jfet etc...
ReplyDeleteI also used an smd J177 on a board, but didn't solder any legs together. Compare your layout to the schematic and see what hacks you may need to do as mentioned above.
DeleteI had already done this circuit but at the time did not work well, when I read here that some colleagues had found a mistake, I decided to try again I found the error and the pedal is now destroying the ears of my neighbors. The correction is only of a resistance, I changed the drawing in Gimp, I send here the link in case someone needs it.

DeleteDoes the circuit really work? I wanted to build it before but I did not understand the supposed error and to work that so good distortion is achieved by being a diy, talking about gain range of tones and noise gate...

ReplyDeleteDone and tested, Q2 using 2SJ74. Thanks, very nice website
ReplyDeleteBuilt this and it does work but like a few other builders I also have extremely low volume from the pedal. Has anyone a fix. reason. clue or hint as to a remedy?
ReplyDeletea jumper from S of the 177 to pin one of the opamp should fix that
DeletePots gate doesn't worked, any suggest?
ReplyDeleteIve built 3 of these now two on veroboard and one with the layout above one of the vero board builds the gate worked but not to well ,I have since found out that the 177 is prone to stop working due to ESD that came from a carbon copy delay that wont work in a diy forum if so there must be a way to fix the problem or add a small noise gate to the enclosure ,the distortion part sounds great.
