Run of Groove Tonemender

Got a request for this one. It's a nice boost with a 3-band EQ. Pots are board mounted and it will fit in a 1590B sideways (ala Zvex pedals) with the circuit board vertical. From the Run Off Groove article:

The Tonemender is a very flexible, yet simple clean boost with a 3-knob tonestack that allows the user to re-create the classic Fender, Marshall and Vox responses.
We suggest using a TLC2272 for the dual op-amp. The TLC2272 is rated for low-noise and rail-to-rail output, which will offer the highest possible clean boost and dynamic range. The NE5532 is another good choice, but a TL072 can also be used with decent results.
The Mid Shift switch (SW1 on the schematic) selects the center frequency of the midrange dip in the response. The center frequency is moved from around 700Hz (Marshall/Vox) down to 400Hz (Fender) in the HI and LO settings, respectively.
For Fender-style curves, the Mid Shift is placed in the LO setting (closed). To replicate Marshall-style curves, switch the Mid Shift to the HI position (open). Set the Mid control between 12:00 and 5:00 for traditional Marshall settings, with lower settings providing additional flexibility. For a Vox-style response, keep the Mid Shift in the HI setting and set the Mids control fixed at 10:00 and move the Bass between 7:00 and 12:00.
A "flat" equalizer position is set with the Bass and Treble both at minimum, and the Mid control at its midpoint. When Bass and Treble are fully cut, the Mid knob acts as an additional Level control, which is a familiar characteristic of the Fender tonestack.

  1. I build it up, however its very noisy, i didn't put it in the case as i dont want to drill a box if its malfunctioning.

  2. I built this, it works well but it's very noisy.
is there anything that needs to be grounded and is not marked in the layout?

  3. Have you put it into enclosure?

  4. I had noise issues with my build as well when testing, once boxed they were gone and it works like a charm, been on my pedal board ever since.

    1. Where you put the tonemender?
      - after dirt pedal? so it act like preamp pushed by Dirt pedal, or
      - before dirt pedal? Act as base tone and push into dirts.

    2. I use mine at the end of the effects chain and use it as an overall adjustment to the sound, but I'm only using 2 other pedals before it at a time, may be different for your setup. I found it best after the dirt pedal when first playing with it

  5. Is there a way to add a "presence" pot?

  6. Can I turn it on "amplifier return"? would be too low? does it work with 18v?

    1. It should work on 18v, assuming you've used appropriately rated caps. And are you asking if it can be used as a preamp?

    1. Box it in metal enclosure, its very silent after box installation, remember keep wires as small as possible.

    2. Shielded input and output cables also help

  9. I made last night, but swapped out the tone stack for the one in the link. I didn't use the mid shift switch, so had to use two jumpers.

  10. for that noise problem, could try to do this, the first stage of the opamp most be that have the pot volume, and the second opamp stage just used as buffer (like the first one in schdmatic) you just have to make some tricks in this layout, but really works like a charm

  11. The Level Pot, It is normal that when you lower it everything continues to sound, shouldn't it be like that?

    2. Try using a bigger output cap than the 220uf like a 470uf or use a high voltage 220uf cap like 50v plus.
