Keeley El Rey Dorado

Here's another Plexi-in-a-box overdrive, this time from the great Robert Keeley. It's a cascaded opamp design running on a bipolar +/-9v supply. The Power Toggle as it's known on the original selects between red LEDs or BAT46s for asymmetrical clipping.

  1. Verified.

Althought I had to do a small mod to make it work.
I don't know if the problem were my caps or the LT1054 I used but it didn't gave me the -9V until I did this:

    Sounds great!

    Thanks for another awesome layout.

    1. That's weird. It didn't work with the 100uF cap from -9 to ground in the original location but did in your modified spot?

    2. Yep, as I said I don't know if there was a problem with the cheap chinese cap I used, but I tried 3 different LT1054 and kept getting weird negative voltages like +8.2 and -1.2.
I checked for bridges or cold solder spot and found none.
Then I pulled the cap off and tried a new one on that other spot and it worked.
I was too lazy to try and put it on the original place.

    3. Weird. Though if you're using a 1054 you don't need to connect pins 1 and 8. Wonder if that has anything to do with it.

    1. It's a 8.2v zener diode. Several options out there, just google for a specific part number.

  4. Hey Guys, can somebody help me out?
I put it together and it makes an awful whistling.
Converter is 7660s cpaz. Any ideas?

    1. Probably your 7660 is not really the "S" version, but a fake one. You can substitute it with LT1054.

    2. Thanks man!! It was a fake one, got the original. Thanxxx

  5. Hi! I noticed that you missed the 22k resistor in parallel with the 39nF capacitor.
It can be placed between the TONE (1) and LEVEL (3) pins.
Although, everything works without it :)
But on the scheme it is.
