Diezel VH4

Gotten a lot of requests for this one and I finally bit the bullet and laid it out. It's the pedal version of the 3rd channel on Diezel's VH4 amplifier with loads of tonal control and tons of gain on tap. Originals are buffered effects, with the input jack wired to the In pad, and a DPDT footswitch selecting between the Out and Buffer Out pads (footswitch wiring diagram below). You can also wire it for true bypass if you prefer and just ignore the Buffer Out pad. The pedal can also be used as a standalone preamp with the Power Out going to the input of a power amplifier (the return jack of an amp's effects loop). It's designed to run off a 12 or 18 volt supply, but it will apparently work just fine of a 9 volt supply (and if planning on going that route, I'd omit the regulator and jump its in and out pads). Also, the indicator LED can be hard mounted to the board, and the whole layout will fit nicely in a 1590BB. Schematic and discussion on FSB here.

  4. Quick question, looking at the layout, there are 2 47uF electro caps (to the left of and above left of the 1044 IC - connected by a 10Ω resistor) that appear to be oriented wrong?

    1. no, the negative leg of those both caps must be connected to the dark red track (negative voltage), as that neg.volt. is an "inverted" voltage, setting ground to zero

  8. How can I supply it with 9v? Only skip the regulator and the charge pump?

    1. One thing to note, if you plan to power it with a 9V PS, omit the LM and add a link from I to O.
      This is what I did and it sounds great at 9v (didn't try 12v)

  9. hello to all, I imagine that like me all those who made this pedal have been confronted with a problem! An unwanted frequency and an oscillation when you exceed twelve o'clock on the gain knob! Indeed this pedal has a very high gain circuit and therefore it radiates a maximum! To remedy the problem it is imperative to wire the gain potentiometer and the volume potentiometer with a shielded cable, but also the input jack, the output jack, the buffer and the power Amp !!! with this, no more noise! If you want more detail about the type of cable I used contact me ... :)

    salut à tous, j'imagine que comme moi tout ceux qui ont fabriqué cette pédale ont été confronter à un probleme ! Une fréquence indésirable et une oscillation lorsque que vous dépasser midi sur le potentiomètre de gain ! En effet cette pédale à un circuit gain très élevé et de ce fait ça rayonne un maximum ! Pour remédier au problème il est impératif de câbler le potentiomètre de gain et le potentiomètre de volume avec un câble blindé, mais aussi le input jack, le output jack, le buffer et le power Amp !!! avec ceci, plus aucun bruit ! Si vous vous voulez plus de détail sur le type de câble que j'ai utilisé contactez moi … :)

  10. Built it and it sounds heavy but not too heavy. It squeals when the gain is past 12, will try to use shielded cable for input and gain and see how it goes.

    3. Yes. You can try putting a buffer in front. I don't have any squeal even on max gain with buffer before the circuit

  13. Bonjour à tous,
    pour tout ceux qui ont un problème avec la fréquence et l'oscilation le problème le suivant ! Lalaland à raison au sujet du buffer c'est dailleur pour ça que je ne me suis pas rendu compte du réel problème car sur mon pédalboard la vh4 est situé après une pédale (Zoom) qui a un buffer intégré !
    SI VOUS NE SOUHAITEZ PAS UTILISER LA PEDAL AVEC UN BUFFER, il faut en fait redessiner le pcb en déplaçant le potentiomètre des aigus le plus loin possible de l'entrée du PCB ! C'est ça le probème !
    J'ai redéssiner le PCB en faisant ceci et tout fonctionne parfaitement !
    Bien sûr je veux bien partager mon shéma, mais sachez que j'ai inclu le footswitch dessus et que le shéma est fait en vectoriel pour une gravure à l'anglaise … Bien sûr les câbles blindés sont toujours d'actualité sur les 2 output, le input, le pot gain et pot volume …
    Si vous faites tout ça ça marchera … C'est garanti !!!

    Si David est ok avec le principe, vous pouvez également m'acheter le pcb gravé à l'anglaise et étammé à froid ! (pour les français uniquement)

    Hello everyone,
    for all those who have a problem with frequency and oscillation the problem following it! Lalaland reason about the buffer it's spoiler for that I did not realize the real problem because on my pedalboard the vh4 is located after a pedal (Zoom) that has a built-in buffer!
    IF YOU DO NOT WISH TO USE THE PEDAL WITH A BUFFER, you must actually redraw the pcb by moving the treble potentiometer as far as possible from the PCB input! That's the problem!
    I redesign the PCB by doing this and everything works perfectly!
    Of course I want to share my schema, but know that I included the footswitch on it and that the diagram is done in vector for an English engraving ... Of course the shielded cables are still relevant on the 2 output, the input, the pot gain and pot volume ...
    If you do all that it will work ... Guaranteed!

    If David is ok with the principle, you can also buy me the cold-etched English-language pcb! (for French only)

  14. Just finished my build and even though it seems to work I think the output volume is too low. Skipped the voltage regulator and went straight 9v expecting less headroom but the same volume level. any thoughts? thanks!

  15. Awesome site! I'm on my 5th or 6th build here, so I'm still kind of new, but I've been looking all over the site for an answer, including the FAQ, and I probably missed it, but why are there ground pads next to the outputs? Thanks!

  16. Hello,

    I think it is possible to wire the pedal with true bypass and the option to choose between Output Jack and Buffer Out by using two 3PDT Footswitches. I like to use the
    3PDT Wiring Board from GuitarPCB for the bypass switch and like to use a red/green Led showing Bypass status and another red/green or better green/yellow Led for Output Jack and Buffer Out status. Am I right?

  20. I don't know where to connect in and ground to the footswitch. Does this only work with DPDT footswitches or both 3PDT and DPDT?

  21. There are two wire pads shown for power out, out and buffer out, where are they wired to? Should I wire one side to ground? ?
