The 8-Bitar is a minimalistic octave down pedal with a 8-bit sound (glitchy and gated square wave fuzz). It's small enough to fit inside a 1590A without any special parts.
The design goal with this pedal was to achieve the core octave tone from the Arcadiator, but with as few components as possible. I'm happy with the result since it only uses one chip (a CD4069).
Usual caveats apply for getting the best tracking - humbuckers, neck pickup and tone rolled off.
great work! vol 2 on output as usually?
ReplyDeleteYeah.
DeleteThanks a lot for this one! I was planning on build this one, but was lazy to make an layout XD. Missing the IC, so it will take some time until I build it. If you do a layout for Into The Unknown, you'll be my hero!
ReplyDeleteHello! Big thx for pcb. I have question. Where is OUT pin?
ReplyDeletehow to connect potentiometer?
DeleteOutput is connected to pin 2 of the potentiometer.
DeleteThanks for this clarification! Just etched two of these tonight. Just waiting for my ICs to come in!
DeleteHello! sorry for my English, guys I love your site, but a little octave down, it would be very cool to see the signet you have on Boss OC-2 as the scheme

ReplyDeleteYou can call this one verified!
ReplyDeleteYou can tag this as verified!I built exactly as specified. So fun to play. I'll be uploading a demo and some gut shots to reddits diypedal sub
ReplyDeleteHi, which is the resistance of the vol pot? and which is the transistor that appears in the layout?
ReplyDeleteThanks
Good work!!!! Thanks for share. Question: where is the output jack? Thanks again
ReplyDeleteThe output is from lug 2 of the Level pot
DeleteThanks thanks thanks!!!
DeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteIs it possible to exclude an octave-down part of the scheme? It doesn't seem to sound well with bass
made one, doesnt work at all... i dont know if its a soldering issue
ReplyDeletePS: is there another IC i can use as a replacement? TI tend to be a little bit harder to find here in Mexico
Maybe u used buffered it needs unbuffered cd4069ube
Deletebreadboarded and soldered...doesn't work
ReplyDeleteWe great!
ReplyDeletea 4069ubp don't works, no sustain. the correct is a 4069UBE, just remember to other peoples. Thanks for the layout.
ReplyDeleteThat's my first DIY pedal. Thank you :)
ReplyDeleteProbably i would have made the volume knob smaller. I can barely pass 9 o'clock
Cheers!
Just made this one, for some reason it is pretty glitchy, no sustain, is it supposed to be like that? It kinda sounds like sag almost, my battery may not have enough juice to power it! I will try a power supply tomorrow, any thoughts?
ReplyDeleteThanks
Yeah nosustain at all .. its just good to play ..
DeleteBut its written in description glitchy and octave down.. still its good to play around haha
Made one to spec, but i'm getting a weird clicking sound taking over the effect, can't find any solder bridges, i know its not a large or complicated pedal, but what causes the clicking sound so i can zero in on the problem?
ReplyDeleteVerified..
ReplyDeleteBut can i make in normal octave?
Anyway?
I do feel rather retarded, but unfortunately it doesn't work for me for some odd fkn reason :-D Have made several way more complicated builds so it's weird and kind of a bummer for this to not be working. The output is very low and kind of distorted (only audible when hitting the strings harder pretty much). I am able to probe the audio signal on the left side of the ic, but nothing on the right side pins-output etc.
ReplyDeleteHas anyone had a similar issue?
I just built this and also had low output except for a fraction of a second when hitting the strings hard, like a really heavy gate effect. I initially used a cd4069 from Tayda. Once I swapped the chip out for one I ordered from Small Bear, the circuit worked fine.
DeleteHey! Thanks for your response. did you get an non "ube" chip at first?
DeleteGlad to hear you've got it working. I decided to try and fire this circuit and try troubleshooting and it works! no idea what was wrong the last time :-D
Both were "ube". I just tried two other of the cd4069ube's from Tayda and both had the gating effect, though not as bad.
DeleteBuilt it!
ReplyDeleteVery fun to play with!
Nice project!
Hello, my friend. Do you have gerber file? I want buy a PCB from China.
ReplyDeleteDIYLC can't create gerbers. If you want a PCB I strongly recommend you buy one from the Parasit Studio: https://www.parasitstudio.se/store/p64/8-Bitar_PCB.html
DeleteThanks for the PCB layout, I used with my few mods. Really good sounding Fuzz.
