Here's a pretty interesting overdrive from Lovepedal (Hermida). The signal goes through a dual PNP silicon transistor stage (don't worry, it's still a negative ground effect), then into a op amp gain stage with soft clipping in the feedback loop, with a Rat-style tone control, followed by an output buffer. Schematic can be found on FSB for reference.
I did this with the same components that indicates the circuit, just for the PNP, I switched to the BC558, because I bought a lot of them for the Band of Gypsys and I really liked it. The sound is very personal, powerful and loud, in my case like my BC558, have an HFE above 600, when I arrive with the volume close to the maximum it enters saturation, even regulating the trimpot to the minimum, I will have to limit the volume pot with a resistance. I'm getting addicted to overdrives, and this is among the best, to add to the collection. Thank you!
I have a problem in the circuit, I have a motorboat noise only when I put the gain in more than 80%, I already looked and I did not find any errors in the scheme, I'll redo the PCB to see if it solves.
this circuit is the sound i have been trying to get for years with tons of gear, over drives /boosts into a marshal amp but never got the sound i wanted, all this time i just needed a Dover Drive into a clean amp . sounds amazing!!! TY for all your work keeping this site running.
I wonder what happens if you throw germanium pnps instead of silicon ones. Will definitely check.
ReplyDeletety for the layout
I'd be interested in how this goes... need to do something with some spare 2n404a

ReplyDeleteI installed old Soviet germanium transistors (q1-mp42b h21 = 82, q2-mp41a h21 = 129). The sound is very cool. Warm and saturated sparkling )))
Diodes are also old Soviet germanium d9b instead of 1N34a

Решил попробовать собрать как и ты! Очень много усиления мне понравилось! )

ReplyDeleteI have this problem too
