Here's the newest version of the Green Rhino from Way Huge. It's similar to a Tube Screamer, but with a few extra stages and lots of modifications. I've laid it out for board mounted pots in a 1590BB. Here's the schematic for reference.
I was wondering if you can help me with something. I like the tone of Green Rhino and I would like to use it as a clean(ish) boost. But is has too much drive. Will replacing the 3K3 resistor (R21 on the original PCB) with a 4K7 resitor help?
verified too! It's not tubescreamer, & I"m glad. It's realy cool over. Used lf353, third used tl062,072,082, every working good. Resistor 61k going to gain should take 10-15 kom, I used four clipping diodes. I added mod, clipping couple mosfet n7000 like "zen overdrive". good sound!
I just finished up the Green Rhino and everything works and it sounds good. The only thing in question is the volume. I have to have the volume turned all the way up to match any of my other pedals at half volume. Just seems like its way too quiet. Is this normal for this build? Any input would be appreciated. Thank you. Also, this is an amazing site! Thank you so much for your efforts. Your youtube channel is great too! I have learned a ton!
What the hell is going on there with all those transistors?
ReplyDeleteCharles, you can use just 1 transistor if you want. This is a technique used to reduce noise
DeleteI had the same thought. For extra input bufferiness? Maybe they were just trying to use up transistors. haha
ReplyDelete1x buffer=good, so 4x buffer = 4x good.
DeleteThank you very much for this one!
ReplyDeleteHi
ReplyDeleteTransistors used are PN2484, not PN2428
there is no such thing as pn2428, but there is a germanium one, called 2n2428 which is quite rare and is not suitable for this circuit
Yep, pardon my typo. Fixed now.

You can tag this one, buddy!
ReplyDeleteThanks man!
DeleteThis thing sounds better than most tube screamers I've head.

ReplyDeleteHi, can you tell me what type those 1uf capacitors are? I've got only electrolytic ones, but I'm not sure they will work in this case.
ReplyDeleteThose are non-polarized box film caps from Tayda
DeleteWhat are the possible replacemens for PN2484 ?
ReplyDeleteAion recommends 2N5088, which I guess means any hi-hfe, lo noise NPN silicon.
DeleteBOA NOITE.
ReplyDeleteNAO CONSIGO ENCONTRAR OS PN2484 E NEM OS LF353.
QUAL O MELHOR SUBSTITUTO PARA AMBOS?
GRATO.
To LF353 use tl072,ne5532,jrc4558...
DeleteTo pn2484 use 2n5088 work...
Work!!!
ReplyDeleteIMHO the NE5532 gave a better tone, thanks for the great work,I am addicted to building pedals with effect hahaha !!!
