Wampler Faux Analog Echo

Today's layout is Brian's take on the PT2399-based delay. It's similar to many other PT delays, but is it's own beast. It can do anything from simple slapback delay to up to around 500 milliseconds of delay. I've laid it out for board mounted pots and it would be a snug fit, but i'll fit in a 1590B (especially if you use low profile jacks).

    David, are you know how to add switch between tail and true bypass in this board?

    i build my own version with all board mounted pots and led (almost) like a dead copy!

    i built with cheaply monolytic caps, sound not good as panasonic ECQ, so i not boxed it before ecq arrived. and want try your layout. Delay Junkies isn't crime, right? hehe

    2. Wait, how does the tails switch work? Sould i wire it like tails and when the switch is off its TBP?

    3. I think I messed up where the tails switch should go in the pic I posted earlier. It should be just to the left of the 1µF cap at the bottom of the board. If it were me, I'd forgo true bypass and just do the tails switch. The buffer design in this is very good and won't color your tone. But if you still want TB, something like this would work:

  2. Leviathan is not an exact copy of Faux Analog Echo. Brian did change some capacitor values and instead of repeat pot > resistor > capacitor order of connection he changed it to repeat pot > capacitor > resistor.

    I've used cheap green mylar capacitors and ordinary ceramic capacitors for smaller values and I like it. For me it is better than my deep blue delay build with more expensive box type film capacitors (what a waste).

    I'll try building Brian's version (Leviathan) and test/check how it differs from my first build.

  6. The pedal works. However, the repeats are very less (4 to 5 @ max) and when sustained notes are played the delay is drowned or suppressed. Is there a workaround to this. Again amazing blog. Thank you for your support.

    1. Same here. Level knob not going above 30% of the original signal and feedback never goes further than 4 audible repeats.

    2. I thought that I did something wrong too... The echo seems very low and i can only get about 3 - 4 repeats and if you are still playing the repeats disappear in the mix... is there some way to raise the level of the repeats... I have also notice that if the pedal is used after a fuzz, all the tone of the fuzz is completely removed...

    3. I just finished this one, and the same stuff happens! There are like just 3-4 repeats, and the delay time doesn't seem to work at all...

    2. This fixed the low repeats issue and now it self-oscillates nicely. Thanks julungas!

      (Increase the 12k resistor that goes to pin 15 of the PT2399 to 47k)

      I have to use 100k resistor...smaller values didn't do the difference.

      Before it didn't a good sound quality, volume and repeats very low.

      Is that 12k resistor right in the layout?

    tails switch?

      It works but seems to need some tweaking. As long as modulation switch is off the Delay works exactly like if no mod circuit was connected. As soon as you turn modulation on delay time gets a little out of control. Seems to have to do with the fact that modulation only works upwards, i.e. modulation can only shorten delay time. Sounds great though. I might try the other circuit Alex suggested later:

    2. This might actually be how the circuit works. It turns the delay into a chorus-like effect and not plain delay time modulation (what I was assuming)

  9. Another question, where do I find the components (RC?) for the high pass filtering of the feedback if any? I'd like to add a switch that changes the high pass cutoff for more flexibility. Thanks in advance

  11. I have to swap one 12k for a 100k resistor: the one that goes to pin 15 of the PT2399.

    Before it didn't a good sound quality, volume and repeats very low.

  12. I have difficulty finding 68nf and 150 nf caps. Would it be okay to do in series 2 33nf (66nf) and 100nf+47nf (147nf)

    1. It's fine to combine caps, but you'll need to run them in parallel, not in series.

  14. Hi! Will this effect and "Wampler Faux Spring Reverb" work with line level signal? I'm building a synthesizer, and would like to add this board to the synth.
    If not, maybe there is a way to swap some parts to make it work with line level signal?

  17. Hello, I'm experiencing big popponp noise when turning the pedal on or off, I added higher pulldown resistors but no lucl,I'm using iviark's dpdt layout , no input grounded, also I disconnected the led, same problem, any suggestions?

  19. The pot on delay increases as I turn the knob counter clockwise
    If I change it to 50kC can it be turned clockwise?

  24. Hi I have a problem with this pedal. When the effect is on, only the clean sound comes out, no sign of life from the potentiometers and the 78L05 gets very hot. I checked components and connections and everything seems ok. Any tips?

  25. Hello, Im having trouble finding a 680pF and 5pF capacitors. The closest I was able to find are 1000pF and 10pF. Can I use these instead or it have to be the exact value?

  28. It worked!! I just cleaned the circuit. I liked the pedal so much that I'm going to sell my tc flashback. For those who are in doubt about the schemes of this blog, this one is much better than disaster transport jr, even though they are similar ideas. The tone pot works. thanks

  29. Really interested in trying this one out but I'm just getting my head around the unusual component values. Pretty new hear so wondering about exchanging them with near valued parts. For instance -

    470k instead of 511k
    10k instead of 12k
    20k instead of 22k

    That'll work, right?

  30. I made this on my bread board , this is one really nice sounding Delay pedal . just perfect. i might try to put two of these in one enclosure to get those stacked delay sounds.

  32. Built it, fired up immediately. Pretty great sounding delay! wish the delay times were a little longer, but I think this build sounds better than the disaster transport vero layout I did.
