Roger Mayer Axis Fuzz

For #FuzzFriday here's Roger Mayer's Axis Fuzz, and it's the 100th fuzz effect on the blog. Maybe I should branch out more... It was designed by Roger in the late 60s for Jimi Hendrix, and is named after the title track of "Axis Bold as Love." It uses a PNP silicon transistor for Q1 and NPN silicon for Q2. So while it will give you some Hendrix-style tones, it isn't quite a Fuzz Face. The schematic can be found here.

  1. Thanks for posting this layout. I build this one and it has good gain, but it sounds too much compressed like zvex fuzz factory when it compressed / too much attack although the pots are all up. I used 2.2uF tantalum cap and 470pf standard ceramic, I changed the volume pot with B10k because it didn't work with A50k. thanks!

  2. I recommend replacing the 47k res with a b50k pot (as variable resistor).
±25k can clean more and give another kind of response

  3. What size enclosure should I use for this pedal?

    1. It’ll fit in a 1590B or anything larger than that.

  4. Hello ... Does anyone know Hfe values of Q1 and Q2 from the original RM?

    1. Hello for me
      Q1 3906 HFE=175
      Q2 3904 HFE=288
      I hope that helps

  5. In this circuit hFE is not critical. This isn't a Fuzz Face.
