Here's the classic Boss DS-1 Distortion, used by many greats like Kurt Cobain, Joe Satriani, and Steve Vai, just to name a few. This one has been modified to eliminate the typical Boss flip-flop switching so it can be wired for true bypass, but it retains the input and output buffers.
That's the absolute minimum hfe of the 3904. Typically they're around 150-200. I got a batch that were all around 350. You could also use 5088s if you want.
I think the two dist pinouts need to be swapped and pins 2 & 3 on the dist pot need to be connected instead of 1 & 2. Apart from that works great Thanks!
After reading the posts I removed the 3904 through 5488 TL and TL 061 by 071 because I had a strange sound when I was pushing hard the strings ... it s really more like it ! In any case, the sound is more precise in my case ! for potentiometers confirm that 2 are upside down (gain & tone ) volume was a mistake on my part ! Thank you for everything, Franck
I just finish this circuit, but is very noisy. The only change i made, was the 1uF Cap at the out for an Electrolitc Non Polarize, cause Poliezter caps are huge. I also was planning to put a Monolitic or Tantalium cap or try with TL071, any other sugestions??
I think i just found a difference with the schematic, the cap between the Q2 and OpAmp is .47uF, not 47nF and the same for the one after the 2.2K resistor and the clipping diodes. Is that an error on the layout?
Hey, thanks for this. Im wondering, is it good to use 3904? I´ve just seen that the hfe is 40.

ReplyDeleteHello guy's
ReplyDeletejust finished the ds1 ! i love it ! But all he pot are at reverse !
any idea ? They seam to be at right place …
If the pots are reversed, just swap the wires going to lug 1 and 3. I probably just misread the schematic.
Deleteok many thanks for your answer ! i was thinking about something like that ! i'll try and let you know
Deletethx

ReplyDeleteI used TL081, and give a little bit of gain, and high ends.

Dear, I have problems to with 2N3904, and I decide use 2N2222, have more smooth signal, and loss lost.

ReplyDeleteit is true, same question here.
DeleteI made it but distortion pot doesn't work..tone and volume are OK, bit i can't controllo the distortion..why?
ReplyDeleteIt don't works. Very treble sound. For a good distortion i must turn the tone knob to 9 o'cloc. What can i do? What can be the problem?
ReplyDeleteMarco
I have the same. Could you solve this problem?
DeleteI will built this.looks very easy.thank for ocb lay out.
ReplyDeleteVerified by me! it works nice with values of pcb layout (a little bit different to the schematic's values )
ReplyDeleteThanks you!
I just confused about the voltage of 47Uf and 100Uf
ReplyDeleteAny advice please ??
35 or 50v electrolytic caps work just fine.
DeleteBut i get a bad for clarity string if 35 or 50 volt
DeleteI think u can.. tl061 is a single op amp and ma741 is also..
ReplyDeleteDid u use it?
ReplyDeleteWhat scheme did you use to make this layout?
