The epitome of buzzsaw fuzz tones, the Shin Ei Companion Fuzz has become a highly sought after fuzz box. The one drawback to the FY-2 is the tone stack between the Fuzz and Volume controls. Besides not being controllable, it drops the volume of the effect below unity. I've drawn up a stock layout, as well as a modded version with a booster at the output to up the volume to a more reasonable level (based on the schematic from General Guitar Gadgets). The stock layout will fit in a 1590A, and the boosted version could as well, it would just be a tighter fit.
A useful mod to the stock layout could be adding a tone bypass switch. Use a DPDT (on/on) and wire it like this:
When the tone stack is bypassed, the volume should increase significantly.
Verifieeed! :D thanks man for this work, this pedal is awesome, only a recommendation, to boost the version is the best, because without boost has less volume :)
The tone stack does shape the tone, so it won't sound the same with it bypassed, it'll just be louder. If it were me, I'd build the boosted version. 3904s should work just fine.
nope, it is not LPB-1. So the schematic is the same but this one uses different values of the components, so, why is this modified?.. can't decide what kind of boost to use ))
this one use 10uf for input and output instead of 100nf, this shoul increase the low frequences, am I right? i just want to use a boost that will not affect too much the original sound.
I laid this out ages ago, but if memory serves, the schematic I used for the boosted version was from GGG. From my understanding the larger caps used like this aren't going to increase low freq but allow for the full range of the tone produced in the FY-2 to come through, just with more volume.

Gut shot or it didn't happen :D haha
Deletehahahaha I have a marshall supafuzz clone but the enclosure is bad :( i see in your instagram your enclosure i the best for the vintage pedals!
Deletethe tone affect the sound in other way beyond the volume drop? 2n3904 works good in q1 and q2 too?

ReplyDeletewhat kind of boost is that?

DeleteThanks for the layout, as always!
DeleteIf you want more low end, omit the 47nF cap next to the 100k resistor/47uF electrolytic. It's not a huge increase, but it sounds a bit fatter.
I laid this out on breadboard and found lugs 1 and 3 of the fuzz pot should be swapped for a clockwise-increase.
oh.. It was some time I didn't reply but, there definitely must be two 100nf caps instead of those two 10uf caps.
ReplyDeleteBoost version verified, sounds epic!!!!
ReplyDeleteAlso added a bulk and RC filter myself
