Marshall Guv'nor

The Marshall Guv'nor is one of the more highly regarded overdrive/distortion pedals of the late 80s, early 90s. With it's amp-like dynamics and a wide range of versatile tones, the Mk. I version of this pedal is still highly sought after. Many artists have used it, though Gary Moore is most associated with it, thanks to his "Still Got the Blues" album.

You can use right angle PCB pots, mounted from the solder-side of the board if you like. It should fit nicely in a 1590B.

  2. Thanks for the verify! I've updated the layout to swap the gain pot so it will work with right angle PCB pots.

  5. I have two questions about this circuit. I built this and everything is working, but it seems to significantly cut the output volume. Is there any way of correcting this? Also, there is no significant increase in the gain until I turn the gain pot to about 3/4 and then from there to all the way up it increases to a medium high gain. Is that the way this circuit is supposed to work?

    1. Most of these older Marshall effects aren't all that loud. You might want to replace the Gain pot with a log taper 100k.

    2. I'm having the exact same issues as you Rick (gain and output volume). We may have buggered something on the board. I have an original Guv'nor and it's output is far louder. I'll see if I can find out what it is.

  6. Should the cap coming off lug 1 of Treble pot be 68nf? Looks that way in the schematic I have.

  7. The 2.2K should go to lug 1 gain pot, not lug 3

  8. and also the level/volume is incorrect. The 470p is placed after the 22k to out. In the gain section the 2k2 and 100n should be on pin 1 not 3.

  9. And the 6n8 on pin 1 of treble should be 68n

  10. Can confirm, if you want this pedal to actually sound like a Guv'nor, you've gotta swap the 6.8nf cap to 68nf and move the 2.2k from the gain pot lug 3 to lug 1 - I drilled an extra hole in the trace directly left of the 2.2k to do that. Once that's done, it sound monstrous.
